"I lived in East Africa for about eight years and was a frequent visitor to the region's game parks. I was used to managing my own travel, doing all the driving, planning all the routes and finding myself the mammals and birds I was looking for. After a break of about thirty years I returned to Tanzania with my wife and another couple who are very old friends with great hopes that they would see the best of Africa's wildlife as I remembered it. My principal apprehension was that we would be in the hands of others, unknown drivers and guides, and perhaps not able to make the best of the experience.

I need not have been concerned. Our driver and guide was Peter Nanyaro.  We could not have wished for a better traveling companion. Peter knows a great deal about Tanzania's wildlife, how animals behave, interact with each other and where to find them.  He also is as sharp on identifying birds as anyone I have traveled with. Peter is an expert driver and a master of the often tricky business of putting a photographer in just the right position. It gets crowded out there in some of the prime spots in places like Ngorongoro Crater or parts of the Serengeti, with sometimes twenty or so safari vehicles jockeying for position around a kill or predators on the hunt. One example stands out clearly: a leopard had been spotted moving through high grass parallel to a small stream bed. Spectators in about fifteen safari vehicles were watching her progress. Peter, alone among assembled guides and drivers decided that she was going to head for one of two nearby large acacia trees. Naturally, he chose the right one and we were parked under it when the leopard crossed the track close behind us, climber the tree and settled on an upper branch right above us.

During the daily runs between the main attractions, either inside the parks or outside, there was always much to be learned from Peter about the lives of the villagers or herders we passed, and about the region's economy and geographic features. Each day he consulted with us about our interests and built the day's travel around them. His easy manner and obvious concern for making our stay a success made him a very welcome addition to our group. It is not possible to think of our fine trip to Tanzania with vividly recall the enormous contribution made by Peter Nanyaro."
