Gorilla Trekking/Rwanda

Gorilla Trekking

Mountain gorillas face an extremely high risk of extinction. They are on the critically endangered list.

Gorilla trekking permits exist to finance gorilla conservation. It also limits the number of visitors, so it is not detrimental to the lifestyle of the gorillas.

Mountain gorillas can only be found in the Virunga Massif, a volcanic mountain range covering the border region between Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC. There are no mountain gorillas in captivity. The gorillas that are found in zoos are the lowland gorillas.

On the day of your trek, you will be at the Kinigi ranger station by 7:00 AM for briefing. You will then break off into a group of 8 people to trek one of the ten habituated gorilla groups. Park rangers and guides will clear a path for you. Once found, you will be able to spend one hour with the gorilla family. Sitting with a gorilla family is one of the most amazing wildlife experiences you will ever have!

Golden Monkey

The golden monkeys are a rare species of Old World monkeys now only found in the Virunga mountain range. They are one of the endangered species on the red list. They live in social groups of up to 90 individuals led by one adult male. This trek is easier than the gorilla trek. It also starts early in the morning, and once found, you will be able to spend one hour with them.
